Started Refereeing: I started training as a referee in Newcastle with the NRG in July 2012. My first open bout as a referee was the October of that year.
Favourite bout/event you have officiated: I would have to say the Men’s World Cup! It was such an honour to officiate the first ever one, and to be doing so so early in my reffing career. There were moments during that tournament that made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. There was a wonderful supportive atmosphere and seeing teams from across the world come together in the city I live in was remarkable.
Best thing about being a ref: I live for the camaraderie. Officials are a funny bunch, I love to meet new people that I can discuss derby with and trade skating tricks. We have to keep a straight face during bouts so our enjoyment is often shown with tiny nods to eachother. It’s like being in a secret club.
One thing you might not know about me: I actually started skating years ago. I set up the Middlesbrough Milk Rollers with my best friend (Natalie Boxall, skate name Germaine Leer) and was their captain for a while. Then I moved to Newcastle where I became the Vice Captain of the Newcastle Roller Girls. I loved skating – but have found my place in stripes.
